University500: Necessity & Benefits
There was a time when a job search in academe meant going through the (limited) number of job postings listed
in your discipline's leading journal or magazine. Later, it probably meant a sequential search of the websites
of Universities you wanted to work for, followed by a review of their open positions. It may also have
entailed a review of the listings on some academic career search sites, but then you found their search
features or services wanting. Well, a paradigm shift is now underway and academic job search will never be
the same again, courtesy of University500 (www.university500.com).
As a community, academicians and researchers have long placed an emphasis on indexed data. Indexing helps
beyond a doubt, more so when you know exactly what you are searching for. University500 presents an
ever-growing listing of University job postings that are pre-indexed and intuitively presented.
If you’re seeking a career (or career change), you would know the specific discipline or disciplines of
interest to you. You probably also know the type, ranking or location of the University you wish to work at
and just do not want to spend the time and effort in periodically searching all these Universities’ websites
or sifting through incomplete lists of open positions at other academic career sites. University500 is our
effort to present positions from leading Universities worldwide, indexed by discipline or field of study,
presented through several personalization features, while also tapping the advantages presented by modern
‘search technology’.

While we began with the initial idea of concentrating on the top 500 Universities (ranked by research
expenditure, degrees awarded, research output etc.), we intend to expand the coverage of this service to
virtually every University, without compromising on the quality of the results expected by discerning users.
We are on our way to covering the initial 500 universities and our efforts are still on as you read these lines.
Several new features are being added in the upcoming two weeks.
We’ve opened up the site with a beta release and and would sincerely appreciate your feedback to improve this service.
